Troll
This is a creature that is about 17 inches high and will have a wire frame that I will
be covering with super sculpey clay. This is a type of clay heat in your over to set it
up. Once I get the skeleton built up with clay I'll add details then add a skin over it
made of latex. And I'm making the jaw & head hinged so I can play around with
talking latex. At the moment the wire frame is one piece. I will be cutting it in
half so I can bake it in my oven. The pictures above shows the shape I'm going for.
On the left you can see a close up of the side of the jaw. I used the sleave of a rivet that
I ran wire thru to make the lower jaw move. I also did the same to make the head move
left & right. I'll cover the rivets up with epoxy to make sure they stay in place, They
both move really smooth. I'm also thinking of making eyeball with leds in them to add a
glow to the eyes.
Here is a back view showing the rib cage. I started to add pieces of wire to connect the
ribs with the ones above and below. This should keep the clay from cracking when it
gets touched. I'm also using foil to build up areas the will be bigger. I like using this clay
so I don't want to waste it. Also it saves money for more clay.
I use the tail to help support the way it will stands. On the right you can see the lower
jaw better. Also I added some epoxy on the rivets. The back of the head is going to be
left open so I can pay around with the mouth and head movements. This is a learning
project so there is very little set in stone. This way I can added new ideas as I go.
I have the legs covered and baked to get the basic shape in place. I will added more clay
to the bones later.
Here is a better look at the legs. So far no problems with cracks.
I cut the wire frame into two piece at the waist. I used some epoxy and a piece of tube
on the lower wire frame. The top wire frame fits into the tube for now but after all the
clay for the bones are done I'll epoxy both pieces together.
Here is a better look at the mid section connection.
Some picrures of the ribs from the side & back. You can see the pieces of wire I used to
support the ribs together are also covered with clay. Once the rest of the body gets done
you really will not notice the supports.
Another look at the connection piece at the waist. And I started working on the tail and
feet. I just want to get a layer of clay on the wire. I'll add more clay later to build up and
shape things.
If you look at the upper legs you will see I wrapped so wire around them to added a little
more support to them. I build up and cover the legs with more clay. I also started to
build up the lower waist. Again the clay I have on the wire is just giving me the basic
shape. I will be building everything up with more clay to add detail.
I started building up the face by spreading clay over the frame. Then I smoothed it out a
little. I'l build the features over this clay later.
I removed the head from the body so I could work on it a little easyier. Also I plan on
adding some movement to the mouth and head so removing it should work well.
Here you can see I added more clay to the ribs. On the right is the headless body and if
you look close you can see the post were the head mounts..
Making big bird feet into boney troll feet.
